As part of Design Week 2011 short discussions
and talks were presented in the Cruth Currach just off the Main Plaza in UL.
On Thursday evening, Jan Frohburg presented a discussion on design. He was
joined by Liam, a member of the Interaction Design Centre in U.L.
The talk focussed on the human
participation needed for good design. People need to be part of the process for
successful results.
Progressive technology matters but have we
gotten to ahead of ourselves? Is it not better to design like the bicycle,
where all the cogs and chains are visible so it can be easily understood? As
opposed to the new sensor doors in continental trains that often don’t work as
efficiently as they should, asking people to vigorously shake their hand above
the sensors defeating their purpose. In this situation would a usual door
handle be more effective? As designers these are the questions that we need to
ask ourselves.
